Abstract

The clinical features of the bipolar disorder during childhood and adolescence may be atypical since this disorder shows variety of features according to each developmental stage. The longitudinal course of child- and adolescentonset of bipolar disorder is manifested by low recovery rate, high relapse rate, frequent changes of polarity, long duration of illness, and various comorbid disorders. The patients with early onset bipolar disorder may have poor outcome when they grow up. However, lack of data regarding longitudinal course of early onset bipolar disorder are insufficient to make clear conclusion. Well systematized prospective studies with longer duration are needed to get more information about longitudinal course and the outcome of the early onset bipolar disorder in the future.
